Tony Lass
MBE, BSc (Hons), Dip. Trop. Ag.
Tony has worked in the cocoa supply chain in various roles from 1967 to date and is an acknowledged world expert on cocoa matters.

On being awarded his BSc Hons in Agriculture from the University of Nottingham in 1967, Tony was recruited by Cadbury Ltd to become a specialist in the agronomy and marketing of cocoa.
The company had a significant share of world cocoa usage and chocolate production and later became Cadbury Schweppes plc, later still Cadbury plc, even later still part of Kraft Foods Inc and is now part of the USA based Mondelez Inc conglomerate.
Some 35 years after graduation from the University of Nottingham, he had become Director of Global Cocoa Supplies at Cadbury plc with responsibility for cocoa procurement and all technical aspects of this vital raw material for chocolate making.
As an acknowledged, and respected, world expert on all aspects of the crop and its market, he has visited more than 40 countries that produce cocoa.
On occasions, he was released by Cadbury to advise governments and international agencies (including ADB, AFDB, EU, IDA, UNDP and the World Bank) on their cocoa projects.
Tony has stimulated and managed a number of multi-national and multi-donor cocoa research projects that aimed at resolution of some of the most pressing challenges facing the crop.
He has presented at international conferences and written widely.

He speaks his native English as well as French, Spanish and Portuguese thus covering the languages of most cocoa producing countries.
He is joint author of the widely read, authoritative and respected, 4th Edition of “Cocoa” – the standard textbook on the crop published in 1985 by Wiley Blackwell.

He is now working on the 5th Edition, while still undertaking short-term consultancies and managing a number of cocoa projects.

In 2007, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to the UK food industry.
